about

I think I wrote this track in January 2019. The lyrics are a desperate cry from an artist realizing they have a long way to go to reach the goals they've set for themselves. "They" in the previous sentence is clearly "me." So let's switch to first-person and own up to this.

I moved to Seattle when I was 22 with the intent to pursue a music career. This song is me taking stock of where I was at 27 years old, telling myself that if I'm still working at the same non-music jobs at 30 years old, I need to dramatically change the course of my life and get back on track to where I want to be. The "listen to me rot" lyric simply means that I'm begging people to listen to me drain my emotions into songs. Enjoy the songs I've spilled my life force into, and then I'll have everything I ever wanted!

The music is pretty simple, just 3 chords on a loop. I tried to record it a few times in different arrangements and never quite got it right. I played it live at solo concerts and always got positive feedback on it. So a couple weeks ago I thought of trying this song again as my 29th birthday approached. And now it finally exists as a manifestation outside of my own head. I'm thrilled to be able to share it with you. Thanks for listening.

lyrics

If I'm still working here at 30,
I hope I will keep the promise
that I made when I was 22.
"You better go do something drastic
it could be something fantastic
and if not what do you lose?"
A minuscule paycheck
with a lack of health insurance
for a dream another rich kid got.
I know that I could do it better with a Fender and a Tascam
than a million other poor white dudes.

Just gotta listen to me
Listen to me rot

I had a dream my teeth were spilling
so I cupped my hands together
but the teeth just fell right through the cracks.
I guess it maybe is symbolic
of something I don't quite understand.
I probably should talk to someone
But I got a crowd so why would I?

Just gotta listen to me
Listen to me rot.
